Course content

In this course a number of separation methods will be discussed more in depth compared to the compulsory Separation Sciences course. Techniques discussed will be:

  • electrophoretic methods;
  • separation of macromolecules (field flow fractionation, FFF);
  • supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC)
  • chiral separations
  • multidimensional liquid chromatography

Other

  • Hand-outs, tutorials and review articles.

Objectives

  • Comprehend the scientific principles underlying following separation techniques: specialised LS separation modes (SFC, chiral separations), capillary electrophoresis, field-flow fractionation techniques and multidimensional chromatography.
  • Be able to discuss similarities and differences between learned separation techniques.
  • Be able to apply this knowledge to determine the key experimental parameters required to optimise the aforementioned separation techniques.
  • Be able to develop methods for real-life applications suitable to each separation technique through guided tutorials.

Teaching methods
