De student kiest ruim voor de officiële startdatum van het bachelorproject zelfstandig een onderwerp en benadert een docent voor begeleiding. De student gaat zich in week 1-2 inlezen in de beschikbare literatuur over het gekozen onderwerp en formuleert op basis hiervan in overleg met de begeleider één of meer onderzoeksvragen. Een beknopt onderzoeksvoorstel waarin de theoretische achtergrond, vraagstelling(en) en plan van aanpak (materiaal en methoden) worden uiteengezet wordt geschreven in het voorafgaande vak Research Project Design and Planning. Eventueel kan dit onderzoeksvoorstel in de eerste weken van het bachelorproject verder worden aangescherpt. Het onderzoeksvoorstel vormt het eerste deel van de bachelor thesis, maar is geen onderdeel van de beoordeling van het bachelorproject (beoordeling van het onderzoeksvoorstel vindt plaats als onderdeel van het voorafgaande vak Research Project Design and Planning).
In week 3-8 vindt het veldwerk plaats of wordt er onderzoek gedaan in het lab. Rond de 8e week vindt ook een tussenevaluatie van zowel de student als de docent plaats.
In week 9-10 vindt de data-analyse plaats en kunnen eventueel nog extra metingen plaatsvinden.
In week 11 en 12 wordt de bachelor thesis afgeschreven, die de vorm heeft van een wetenschappelijk artikel. In week 12 wordt een Engelstalige eindpresentatie gegeven.
Het eindverslag dient uiterlijk 28 juni 2021 te worden ingeleverd, tenzij anders met de begeleider én coördinator is afgesproken. Bij een te laat ingediend verslag zal de student een 'NAV' krijgen, met de mogelijkheid om het opnieuw in te dienen als herkansing.
Neem bij mogelijke stagevertraging zo spoedig mogelijk contact op met de bachelorprojectcoördinator.

De student wordt geacht 40 uur per week aan het project te werken en deel te nemen aan door de onderzoeksgroep geplande activiteiten.

Het research report, de data repository en de eindpresentatie kunnen afzonderlijk herkanst worden. Voor een herkansing kan maximaal een 6 gehaald worden.
Het is niet mogelijk om het praktisch werk te herkansen. Indien het praktisch werk onvoldoende is dient een nieuw bachelorproject over een ander onderwerp gedaan te worden, bij voorkeur bij een andere begeleider. Dit geldt ook als één van de herkansingen van de andere onderdelen onvoldoende blijft.
In some cases it will be advisable to write a full research proposal in the first 3 weeks. This is up to the supervisor to decide. This research proposal will form the basis of the introduction and materials & methods of the final report. Oral presentations of the proposal may take place in the research group, or at the host institution. Neither proposal nor presentation of the proposal will be formally graded as part of the bachelor project.
The final research report is written in English and starts with a title page with the report title, the student name and number, the supervisors (assessor, examiner and daily supervisor), and the submission date. It contains a summary, material and method, results, discussion and references. There is no minimum or maximum to the number of words, pages or references used. In general, the length of the report should be comparable to a journal article reporting the same research, 4,000 words is a good indication. The basic principles can be found in the manual “Wetenschappelijke verslaglegging” (Scientific Writing) of the course “Academische Vaardigheden” (Academic Skills, year one bachelor Biology). The research report will be graded according to the rubric in DataNose by both the supervisor(s) and the examiner.
The final oral presentations (in English, 12 minutes + 3 minutes discussion) will take place during the last week of June at the UvA. The schedule will be announced in June. Students will organise the symposium, act as session chairs, and guide the discussion. The assessment by a panel of examiners (appointed by the coordinator) is made according to the rubric of the bachelor project. The grades for the oral presentation are the average grades of the panel members. Parents/guardians of the students are also welcome during the presentations.
In case of external projects, students may also be asked to give an oral presentation at the department/institute where the project was performed. Such presentations may be used to prepare for the oral presentation and discussion at the University of Amsterdam, but cannot replace a presentation at the UvA and will not be formally graded.

Week 1-3
Reading literature and updating the project description. Optional adaptation of the research proposal, pilot experiments, construction of a data repository.
Week 4-8
Practical work, documentation of the data and preliminary analysis. In week 4 and 8 both student and supervisor will receive a mail with a request to report on the current status through a small questionnaire.
Week 9-10
Final experiments. Analysis and documentation of the data. Writing an outline of the final research report with introduction, the proposed figures and conclusions, submitted end of week 9 latest week 10. Receiving feedback from the supervisor.
Week 11-12
Writing the final version of the report. Peer review by students. Submitting the final report in DataNose at the end of week 12. Oral presentation of the project at the symposium.

For honours students, a simple extension of the bachelor project is not sufficient; they are expected to make a specific assignment, which will take part partly during the regular trajectory and partly afterwards.
