Course content

The goal of this course is to introduce students to the theory, principles and practices of information organization including approaches for representation, description, classification and cataloging. Topics covered include the history of information organization, classification schemes, information architecture, encoding standards, metadata schemas and ontologies as well as the social and design approaches to information organization systems.

  • Critically analyze existing information organization systems.
  • Understand the social and institutional embedding of organization systems.

The goal is to understand key concepts in organization and then apply them both in individual assignments as well as in a larger project. This is done by engaged reasoned and discussion

Learning activities

The course includes both a practical component - creating and applying information organization approaches and systems. Werkcolleges are there to support this but are insufficient. Students need to use their self-study time to perform assignments.. In addition, there is a significant amount of reading and study associated with the course, which also must be done in the self study allotment.

In OER-B of the programme no requirements regarding attendance are mentioned.

Additional requirements for this course:

Students are expected to prepare themselves before every lecture, in order to get the most out of the lectures. Therefore, students are expected to do the required reading  prior to each lecture. During the lectures, we can then dig deeper into the topic. In class discussion plays a critical part of this course. Participation is measure by engagement in the lectures and through the online discussion form.

Participation
  • Grading
    • You must receive at least 24 points on the exam. The exam is digital.
    • The points of all assignments (other  the exam) are added together .
  • Late policy:
    • You'll be deducted 1 point for every day an assignment is late.
  • Retake
    • The retake exam only substitutes for the final exam.

We will schedule a separate sessions to go over both project results and exam results if requested by students.
