Globale inhoud

The course Thema II: Privacy is characterized by two approaches: (1) interdisciplinarity and (2) a focus on topical questions. The course is strongly committed to the news. By doing so, we create a relevant context in which scientific knowledge can be understood and in which the questions posed in class become urgent - almost every day there is a privacy-related story in the news, whether it's about the NSA, the privacy policies of Apple, Google and Facebook, discriminatory profiling, the right to be forgotten, the electronic patient file or data leaks and hacks.

• For every week, mandatory and optional readings will be provided via Canvas. You need The Handbook of Privacy Studies, eds. Bart van der Sloot and Aviva de Groot, which is available through the Amsterdam University Press website, either in print or as an ebook. There is also a copy available in the library, at IVIR.

• To gain insight in the value of privacy, its role and function in interpersonal relations and its constitutive relevance for democratic states.
• To understand the potential threats to privacy and to gain insight in the different possible solutions.
• To learn the skills and crafts of Privacy Studies, with emphasis on analytical skill training.
• To learn to think in an interdisciplinary way and to approach the central theme through qualitative and quantitative skills and methods.
• To gain academic writing and research skills.

Aanwezigheid

Aanwezigheidseisen opleiding (OER-B):

• In geval van werkgroepbijeenkomsten is de student verplicht tenminste 90% van de werkgroepbijeenkomsten bij te wonen en zich op deze bijeenkomsten terdege voor te bereiden, tenzij anders aangegeven in de studiehandleiding. Indien de student minder dan 90% heeft bijgewoond, kan het vak niet worden afgerond.
• In geval van een practicum is de student verplicht ten minste 90% van de practicumbijeenkomsten bij te wonen en zich op deze bijeenkomsten terdege voor te bereiden, tenzij anders aangegeven in de studiehandleiding. In geval de student minder dan 90% heeft bijgewoond dient het practicum opnieuw te worden gevolgd.

Aanvullende eisen voor dit vak:

In de weekplanning (onder) staat vermeld voor welke bijeenkomsten een aanwezigheidsplicht geldt. (NB. De hoorcolleges in het eerste deel van de cursus zijn een verplicht onderdeel.) Dit betekent dat studenten verplicht zijn 90% van deze bijeenkomsten bij te wonen. Indien niet aan deze voorwaarden wordt voldaan volgt uitsluiting van het vak. Onder deze regel vallen alle redenen van afwezigheid, ook afwezigheid door bijvoorbeeld ziekte.

Toetsing

Examination will consist of a final exam after the first part of the course and an essay at the end of the course.

Written exam

The exam (50% of the final grade) will consist of six sections corresponding to each discipline (ethics, law, communication science, anthropology, economics, healthcare). Each section contains one or more questions about the literature or issues addressed in the guest lectures.

Final essay

The second part of the course is concluded with an essay, which determines 50% of the final grade. Information about the essay assignment and supervision will be available via canvas.uva.nl.

Vakevaluatie afgelopen jaar

Vanaf 2013-2014 hebben we ervoor gekozen om d.m.v. onderstaande tabel de studenten meer inzicht te geven in de kwaliteitszorg. Daarom nemen we een korte weergave van de studentenevaluatie op en de daaruit voortvloeiende acties ter verbetering van het vak.
