Course content

In this course a number of separation methods will be discussed more in depth compared to the compulsory Separation Sciences course. Techniques discussed will be:

  • electrophoretic methods;
  • separation of macromolecules (FFF);
  • LC-MS hyphenation and specialised separation modes
  • multidimensional liquid chromatography

Objectives

By the end of this course students will:

  • Comprehend the scientific principles underlying following separation techniques: liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, specialised LC separation modes, capillary electrophoresis and MS hyphenation, field flow fractionation techniques, and multidimensional liquid chromatography.
  • Be able to discuss similarities and differences between learned separation techniques.
  •  Be able to apply this knowledge to determine the key experimental parameters required to optimise the aforementioned separation techniques.
  • Be able to develop methods for real-life applications suitable to each separation technique through guided tutorials.
