Course content

The Research Proposal prepares for the MSc thesis project. The research proposal describes the problem or topic that has to be investigated; the reason that you chose this particular problem or topic, when, where and how you will do the research.
The proposal reflects your research plans anticipated for the MSc thesis project. The research proposal has to be based on literature that clarifies the relation with earth scientific research, and the posed research questions.

Objectives

  • To design independently a scientific research plan to solve a (multi-disciplinary) research question in an academic setting.
  • Carry out a literature review within the perspective of the research question of the proposal.
  • Developing an (experimental) research design to answer the proposed research question, and that is feasible within the time frame given in the proposal and that can be carried out in the master thesis research
  • Presenting and defending the research proposal in an academic environment (Research Workshop)

Teaching methods

  • Working independently on e.g. a project or thesis
  • Supervision/feedback meeting

A written report containing the research proposal of at most 6000 words.
