Globale inhoud

In this course, students will work on an AI-related project in a small group of 3 to 5 students. In order to foster interaction with the "outside world", the projects are done in collaboration with companies whose commercial activities are connected to AI. Each company involved in the course will define a project related to a real product, application, or problem that the company needs to deal with. You and your team will work full time for one month on one of these projects, jointly supervised by a member of the host company (the client) and a researcher at the university (the academic mentor).

The list of participating companies and projects on offer varies every year. Before the project period starts, the list of available projects will be made available and  students will be asked to submit their preferences. On the basis of these preferences, the coordinator will allocate individual students to projects with a maximum of 5 students per project.

Studiemateriaal

Literatuur

  • Franken, Michael. 2013. Scrum voor Dummies. Amersfoort: BBNC.

Overig

  • Some material on project planning and management will be made available on Canvas. The project supervisors may recommend some background reading if that seems useful for particular projects.

Leerdoelen

The overal aim of this course is to connect students to the corporate world outside academia and to train them on how to apply their AI knowledge and skills to real problems in industry. By the end of the course, students should be able to:

Project content:

  • Apply and combine different AI-related knowledge and skills to concrete problems defined by the needs of a corporate stakeholder.
  • Analyse the goals of the project.
  • Develop and implement an appropriate solution.
  • Evaluate the performance of the final application.

Project planning and management:

  • Define intermediate goals and develop a work plan.
  • Organise work within a team.
  • Manage their time to meet internal and external deadlines.

Project report and presentation:

  • Document their implementation to allow others to use it, modify it or extend it.
  • Summarise the goals of the project, the features of their proposed solution, and possible improvements for the future.
  • Communicate their work to an audience in a coherent and professional manner.

Onderwijsvormen

  • Presentatie/symposium
  • Begeleiding/feedbackmoment
  • Zelfstandig werken aan bijv. project/scriptie
  • Hoorcollege
  • Reporting and feedback sessions: all groups will meet together with the coordinator a few times during the project period to report and get feedback on project planning, project management and work progress, and to present the final results of the project.
  • Team work: the majority of the time will be dedicated to work on the project within your team.
  • Supervision meetings: meetings with the company and academic supervisors should take place regularly.

Professional Attitude

All scored components of the final grade may compensate for each other, i.e., any student who completes the progress journal, submits a draft of the final report, and receives a total of 110 points or more across all scored components will pass the course. Although in general, members of the same group will receive the same score per component of the final grade, students who demonstrate exceptionally strong or exceptionally weak performance relative to their group on a component may receive a higher or lower score for that component.

Students who miss the Planning or Progress Presentation will receive 0 points for the missed presentation; students who miss the Final Presentation without prior approval will fail the course. Students who do not complete the progress journal or do not submit a draft of the final report will fail the course. Students who submit the Final Report or Final Implementation late will lose 3 points (final report) or 6 points (final implementation) per calendar day late. Students who fail to submit a Professional Attitude report on time will receive 0 points for that component.

Due to the work with external partners, it is not possible to resit most components of the final grade. The only exception is the Final Report: if a student's final grade overall is less than 5.5 (110 points) AND the Final Report is less than 17 points, that student may submit an improved report two weeks after grades are announced.

Aanvullende informatie

The plenary sessions with the coordinator will be conducted in English. All presentations should be done in English, and the final report should also be written in English unless the client explicitly requests a Dutch version.

The projects will cover a wide range of topics and areas and often they will require using and combining different types of expertise. All of the knowledge and skills acquired in all the first and second year courses of the BSc AI can potentially be important.
