Course content

In this course a number of separation methods will be discussed more in depth compared to the compulsory Separation Sciences course. Techniques discussed will be:

  • electrophoretic methods;
  • separation methods for macromolecules (e.g. FFF);
  • gradient LC;
  • multidimensional separations (GCxGC and LCxLC).

Syllabus

Other

  • Hand-outs, tutorials and review articles.

Objectives

By the end of this course students will:

  • comprehend the scientific principles underlying key separation techniques: electrophoresis, field flow fractionation and multidimensional chromatographic techniques.
  • be able to apply this knowledge to determine the key experimental parameters required to optimise the aforementioned separation techniques.
  • be able to describe applications suitable to each aforementioned separation technique.
  • apply knowledge of the practical application of some of these separation techniques through guided demonstration experiments.
