In this course we will use quantum mechanics to understand the structure of matter. We will study the structure of atoms, nuclei and particles and the details in the spectra. This requires a thorough knowledge of angular momenta and their addition rules. We will also look at the emission and absorption of light, lifetimes of states and scattering phenomena. In most cases an exact description of these real world situations is not possible and we will have to resort to approximation schemes such as perturbation theory, variational methods or WKB methods to understand the details.
