The first part (two weeks) of the course will be used to learn and teach the following topics:
Also, in this same period students will study and prepare paper discussion sessions about recent scientic papers. Also several study visits will be organized to the Hortus Botanics in Amsterdam, to illustrate and apply the knowledge mentioned above. If possible excursions to Wetlands International and the Soil Museum will be organised.
During the third week students will organize a minisymposium on a specific theme. This theme wil be selected at the start of the course. Examples are 'Fragmentation and effects on tropical diversity'; degradation of high-mountain systems and risks for drinking water supplies; effects of deforestation; etc. If possible an national symposium will be organised about recent PhD studies in Tropical Ecology in the Netherlands.
After this module students have acquired knowledge and comprehension on the characteristics and functioning of tropical terrestrial ecosystems.

Attendance at all practicals, escursions, symposia, and seminars is required.
Attendance at lectures is highly recommended.
Without informing the coordinator of absence at obligatory components, exclusion of the course might be a consequence. When absence is reported in time and the reason is accepted by the coordinator, a replacement assignment has to be made. Not completing this assignment within two weeks after the end of the course, exclusion of the course will be the consequence.

A student has passed the course when each partial examination is graded with a 5.0 or higher (this also holds for the written exam) and when the weighted final grade is 5.5 of higher. Resit options for paper discussions and Conferences essay are only available if grades are <5.
The manner of inspection will be communicated via the digitial learning environment.
at the start of each meeting all students individually write down the answers to four questions about the paper. After submitting these answers (for grading), there will be a group discussion about the paper (on the basis of the answers). The questions to be answered about each paper will be made public on blackboard at the start of the course.
students will be asked to prepare short introductions about certain topics to be presented orally to the group during the visit to the Hortus. No grading
there will be two subjects, supported by documentation, as explained at the start of the course. Per subject, five groups of students each (each group with 4 or 5 students). Each group prepares and gives an oral presentation of 10' + 5' on the conference meeting. Each person from a group writes an essay (in English) of 1000 words about the subject of the group. Dit vak hanteert de algemene ‘Fraude- en plagiaatregeling’ van de UvA. Onder plagiaat of fraude wordt verstaan het overschrijven van het werk van een medestudent dan wel het kopiëren van wetenschappelijke bronnen (uit bijvoorbeeld boeken en tijdschriften en van het Internet) zonder daarbij de bron te vermelden. Uiteraard is plagiaat verboden. Hier wordt nauwkeurig op gecontroleerd en streng tegen opgetreden. Bij verdenking van plagiaat wordt de examencommissie van de opleiding ingeschakeld.
