Frontiers in Medical Biology II builds on the knowledge and skills acquired in Frontiers in Medical Biology I.
In week 1-2 students will develop their business idea into a full business model, exploring the involved stakeholders.
In week 3-8 students will identify a fundamental research question and work on their own STW research proposal on a topic of their choice, aimed at addressing one of these societal challenges by proposing an original idea for basic biological research in collaboration with an industrial partner. Students will get support and guidance for writing the research proposal.
To get an idea of ongoing active research in the areas of interest, guest lecturers will present ‘highlights’. Students will actively prepare for these lectures by reading assigned papers in order to be able to discuss the presented science with the guest lecturer in a Q&A session.
To continue active engagement with the knowledge obtained in Frontiers in Medical Biology I, students will also work on a webvideo about the topic of their STW proposal, in order to communicate the importance and value of their fundamental research question to a broad audience.
This course will focus on three of today’s biggest societal health challenges: “Cancer”, “Aging” and “Food for Health”.
Building on the knowledge and skills acquired in Frontiers in Medical Biology I, students will pick a topic of choice to
- develop a business idea by turning it into a full business model exploring the involved stakeholders
- identify a fundamental research question and write their own research proposal
- make a webvideo to explain the fundamental biology underlying one of today’s societal health challenges to the general public.

After having taken Frontiers in Medical Biology II, students will be able to
- To demonstrate knowledge of societal health challenges
- To apply science related entrepreneurship skills
- To write a business plan, explore the stakeholders and pitch a business idea.
- To write a scientific research proposal.
- To communicate the importance and value of fundamental research to a broad audience.
- To engage with senior (top) scientists that actively study biological topics underlying today’s biggest societal health challenges.
Students will get support and guidance for writing the research proposal in an introductory lecture and in small groups. Most of the writing will be done in the student’s own time. All research proposals are presented at the end of week 8.
In week 3-7 guest speakers will present highlight lectures twice a week. Out of a courtesy to these guest researchers that are often from outside the University of Amsterdam, attendance at the highlight lectures is mandatory.

Overview of the Highlight lecture |
Onderstaande opdrachten komen aan bod in deze cursus:
Dit vak hanteert de algemene ‘Fraude- en plagiaatregeling’ van de UvA. Onder plagiaat of fraude wordt verstaan het overschrijven van het werk van een medestudent dan wel het kopiëren van wetenschappelijke bronnen (uit bijvoorbeeld boeken en tijdschriften en van het Internet) zonder daarbij de bron te vermelden. Uiteraard is plagiaat verboden. Hier wordt nauwkeurig op gecontroleerd en streng tegen opgetreden. Bij verdenking van plagiaat wordt de examencommissie van de opleiding ingeschakeld. Wanneer de examencommissie overtuigd is dat er plagiaat gepleegd is dan kan dit maximaal leiden tot een uitsluiting van al het onderwijs van de opleiding voor een heel kalenderjaar. Zie voor meer
