| Onderdeel van | Bachelor Scheikunde, jaar 3 |
The broad theme of the course is to examine how the chemistry and structure of materials allow them to fulfil their required function. The specific subjects covered in more detail are
• Preparation, characterization and functionalization of polymers, and the general properties of polymeric systems and polymer networks.
• Strength and flexibility, biological fibres and their association with molecular motors.
• Colloidal suspensions, basic concepts for tuning their properties, applications in food technology, colloidal crystals and their application.
• Amphiphiles and their application in membranes and micellization.
• Liquid crystals, properties and applications.
• Materials for energy production, gas storage, adsorption, separation and catalysis. Examples being microporous, mesoporous, nanomaterials and metal organic frameworks.
• Magnetic and magneto-optic materials, Li-ion batteries
• Instrumental techniques for materials characterization such as X-ray techniques, thermal techniques, microscopic techniques.
The focus is on familiarizing the students with the challenges of materials design for important technological applications. Further they also learn how to characterize the materials (by techniques such as GPC, XRD, TPR, adsorption).
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
1. define how the chemistry and structure of materials relate to their functionality.
2. describe and compare different synthesis techniques for functional materials.
3. illustrate the different techniques to characterize the functional materials.
4. describe the concepts needed to rationally design new functional materials
5. analyse already existing knowledge on functional materials and connect this with future requirements
6. work in a team, collect data, prepare and deliver information in an oral/verbal way.
This course involves lectures, exercise classes, assignments, a two day practical, student presentations and an industrial visit. Students prepare and deliver a short presentation (in groups or individually, according to their choice) on a topic selected by them, explaining how the chemistry of the selected material gives it its functionality.

Aanvullende eisen voor dit vak:
Attendance at all aspects of the course such as lectures, tutorials, presentations and practicum are highly recommended. The industrial visit (if present) gives the students a chance to see the real application of concepts taught in lecture rooms, which should greatly help in broadening the knowledge, and also highly recommended.

A minimum of 5.5 is required in the examination and, except under exceptional circumstances, completion of all the above parts of the course.
If there is an industrial visit, a short report on the industrial visit is required, which will be assessed. Assessment will be based on how well the students structure the report, the content and how well they connected the concepts they learned in the classroom to the industrial practice.
A short report on practical is required. The manual for the practicum contains what is expected from the report.
Student presentations are part of this course, which will be graded. A list of topics is available on the Blackboard. Students are also encouraged to choose their own topics within the theme ‘functional materials’.

Uiteraard is plagiaat verboden.
