The main subjects covered in the course will be:
Prerequisites:
• Whitlock, M. C., Schluter, D., Second Edition: The analysis of Biological Data, ISBN 978-1- 936221-48-6 (Robers and Company Publishers). Any edition of the book is suitable for the course. – In particular focus on Chapters 1-5 (already covered in the previous years of the BSc program).
Manuals for the course:
• Whitlock, M. C., Schluter, D., Second Edition: The analysis of Biological Data, ISBN 978-1- 936221-48-6 (Robers and Company Publishers). Any edition of the book is suitable for the course. – Chapter 20 (likelihood)
• Attaway, S. (2012). Matlab, Second Edition: A Practical Introduction to Programming and Problem Solving ISBN 978-0-12-385081-2 (Butterworth-Heinemann). Any edition of the book is suitable for the course.
Students will learn the basic concepts of computer-assisted analysis of biological signals, with a focus on neurophysiological data. The course is mostly a practical one, where the emphasis is on the application of analytical techniques on real data, spanning from electroencephalographic recordings to neuronal spiking activity. Each topic (such as Fourier decomposition, spike train analysis) will be covered by a short theoretical introduction, followed by a demonstration on real data. Students will learn the basics of programming in MATLAB, and the use of toolboxes and algorithms for the analysis of neurophysiological signals.
At the end of the course students will be able to:
· read, interpret and design computer programs in MATLAB;
· describe and use the most relevant signal processing techniques for spectral analysis and for the analysis of spiking data;
· select the most appropriate signal processing techniques for spectral analysis and for the analysis of spiking data;
· independently develop MATLAB program to perform simple signal processing routines.
| Week 1 to 3 | Colleges (2 hours per day), Computerpractica (2 hours per day, with assistance) and self-study (computer room will be available each day for an additional 2 hours). |
| Week 4 | Preparation for final test. |

Students are highly advised to be present at the lectures (hoorcolleges), and are required to attend the practical sessions during which exercises will have to be performed. Student participation during these sessions will be graded by the practical teachers (20% of the final grade, minimum grade is 5). Students are allowed to skip at most 10% of the compulsory sessions, and need to justify their absence. Compulsory practical sessions are indicated in the course schedule.
Some practical sessions are entirely dedicated to the preparation of the weekly assignment (see the schedule). Attendance to these sessions is highly advised but not compulsory.

Each week students will have to perform a group assignment, based on the development of MATLAB code. Groups for assignments (3-4 students) will be announced at the beginning of the course. During the week after the previous assignment feedback will be given by the supervisors.

Uiteraard is plagiaat verboden.

Students will be engaged in the “Signaalanalyse toernooi”. Each group of students working on assignments will compete with each other for the shortest and the fastest code able to perform the required functions. Although this will not be part of the grading, it will engage students, stimulate them to work towards the best possible code (shorter is usually faster), and will lead to a small prize for the best groups (after all 3 assignments). For any additional information on the course please refer to the Blackboard and Datanose pages of the course.
