Globale inhoud

Information Management today struggles with its identity mainly due to its traditional focus on technology and information production. We move away from this view towards a view where information use is recognized as the sole source for sustainable value added. Several aspects of this move are highlighted in the course. Topics covered may include for example:

• a critical examination of the assumptions underlying the central notions of information and knowledge management and contrasting these core notions with alternative ones.
• a historical contextualization of the field by focusing on the role of information management before the introduction of ICT.
• an examination of actual and emergent issues which are crucial for information management in the coming years, e.g. organizational identity, sourcing, innovation, AI.
• an exploration of implications of the above for knowledge management

Leerdoelen

• Student can describe the development of information management from the 19th century onwards and compare this to today’s role.
• Student can apply objectivistic and subjectivistic ontologies and epistemologies in the context of information and knowledge management.
• Student can explain the mutually constitutive character of ICT, strategy and identity and can explain implications for organisations.
• Student can explain the role of information and knowledge management for sourcing.
• Student can explain the impact of open innovation for information and knowledge management.
• Student can describe the impact and challenges of using AI in organisations.
• Student can explain basic perspectives on the relation between humans and technology i.e. instrumentalism and a socio-technical approach.

Each week we have a plenary lecture and one or more seminars (werkcolleges). Preparation for lectures is mandatory - also in the first week!
