(Bio)molecular sciences are centered on structure–function relationships. Molecular structure, defined by covalent bonds, non-covalent interactions, and structural dynamics, determines the behavior and function of biomolecules. Proteins, for example, rely on their structural organization and flexibility to perform diverse biological roles. When structure is altered, function is often compromised, highlighting the importance of structural insight.
In this course, mass spectrometry (MS) is the central analytical technique used to probe molecular structure and function. Owing to its high sensitivity, selectivity, and compatibility with tandem approaches, MS enables detailed analysis of chemical composition, stoichiometry, sequence, and molecular interactions. You will develop the skills to interpret mass spectra and apply MS-based strategies to characterize biomolecules.
The course combines lectures with practical training. In the laboratory component, you will gain hands-on experience with MS instrumentation and data analysis. A key experiment involves peptide sequencing, where you will perform and interpret MS-based de novo sequencing in small groups.
The course concludes with a short group presentation on an alternative method (other than MS) to determine the structure or function of the peptide/protein identified in your MS experiment; this presentation is part of the final grade.
