Globale inhoud

This short course teaches students the basics of structured writing and technical English. The students learn how to write short and clear sentences, default to the active voice, avoid repetition, and build a coherent story. Students work on developing a short and clear paper that is based on data from the primary peer-reviewed scientific literature. Each group of students writes a short analytical thesis which is then evaluated by the respective supervisor. The supervisor gives the final course mark based on the quality of the written thesis.

Leerdoelen

• The student can formulate a relevant research question.
• The student can search and select relevant literature to answer their research question.
• The student can critically evaluate papers in peer-reviewed journals in chemistry.
• The student can draw sound conclusions from the papers they read.
• The student can write a short and clear thesis in Academic (technical) English.
• The student can properly structure their thesis as a coherent story with the research question as the central theme.
• The student can collaborate in a team, by working together on the thesis.

Aanwezigheid

Aanwezigheidseisen opleiding (OER-B):

• Van elke student wordt actieve deelname verwacht aan het onderdeel waarvoor hij staat ingeschreven.
• Als een student door overmacht niet aanwezig kan zijn bij een verplicht onderdeel van het onderdeel, dient hij dit zo snel mogelijk schriftelijk te melden bij de betreffende docent. De docent kan, eventueel na overleg met de studieadviseur, besluiten om de student een vervangende opdracht op te leggen.
• Het is niet toegestaan om verplichte onderdelen van een onderdeel te missen als er geen sprake is van overmacht.
• Bij kwalitatief of kwantitatief onvoldoende deelname, kan de examinator de student uitsluiten van verdere deelname aan het onderdeel of een gedeelte daarvan. Voorwaarden voor voldoende deelname worden van te voren vastgelegd in de studiewijzer en/of op Canvas.

Aanvullende eisen voor dit vak:

Weekly meetings with supervisors, which should be arranged by the students and their supervisors.  

Toetsing

The grading is done by the literature project supervisors based on the quality of the report.

Use of UvA AI chat must be discussed with the thesis supervisor. 

The use of UvA AI chat is allowed only as a brainstorm tool and to improve their language. Any other use is not allowed.

Fraude en plagiaat

Dit vak hanteert de algemene 'Fraude- en plagiaatregeling' van de UvA. Hier wordt nauwkeurig op gecontroleerd. Bij verdenking van fraude of plagiaat wordt de examencommissie van de opleiding ingeschakeld. Zie de Fraude- en plagiaatregeling van de UvA: http://student.uva.nl

Report requirements: You must use the template provided. The length of the report may not exceed 12 pages, including tables, figures and references. We’re using a two-column template with small text (similar to a real journal) so 8–10 pages should 
suffice. You are allowed a maximum of 25 references.
