Organic chemistry is a central discipline in the chemical sciences that intersects not only virtually all other fields of chemistry, but also physics, biology and medicine. Consequently, the course Introduction to Organic Chemistry takes a central role in the first semester of the curriculum. After in an introduction to some basic concepts in organic chemistry, we will explore various types of chemical reactions with a focus on fundamental concepts of structure and reactivity. Specific topics include acidity and basicity of organic compounds, stereochemistry, conformational analysis, addition and substitution reactions at the carbonyl group, nucleophilic substitution, and elimination reactions.

Leerdoelen

• The student is able to apply various types of organic reactions, including additions to and substitution at the carbonyl group, nucleophilic substitution at saturated carbon, and elimination reactions
• The student is able to provide detailed reaction mechanisms for various reaction types in different contexts.
• The student is able to estimate acidic or basic properties of organic molecules (including organometallics) based on their structure, and correlate these to related properties such as nucleophilicity.
• The student is able to explain the basics of NMR spectroscopy and to interpret 1H NMR spectra of simple organic compounds.
• The student is able to interpret the three-dimensional structure of organic molecules and assign an absolute configuration to stereogenic centers.
• The student is able to deduce different possible conformations of linear and cyclic organic molecules (Newman projection, chair representation) and assess the most stable conformation based on steric arguments.

Lectures

For consistency and clarity, the lectures will mostly closely follow the line of the course book, in an interactive format. We will maintain a ‘one chapter per lecture’ format. All lecture slides will be made available on Canvas.

Seminars

During the exercise seminars you will work on selected problems associated to the lecture just before, with the assistants available for questions. Solutions to problems will be made available on Canvas in the form of videos.

Aanwezigheid

Aanwezigheidseisen opleiding (OER-B):

• Van elke student wordt actieve deelname verwacht aan het onderdeel waarvoor hij staat ingeschreven.
• Als een student door overmacht niet aanwezig kan zijn bij een verplicht onderdeel van het onderdeel, dient hij dit zo snel mogelijk schriftelijk te melden bij de betreffende docent. De docent kan, eventueel na overleg met de studieadviseur, besluiten om de student een vervangende opdracht op te leggen.
• Het is niet toegestaan om verplichte onderdelen van een onderdeel te missen als er geen sprake is van overmacht.
• Bij kwalitatief of kwantitatief onvoldoende deelname, kan de examinator de student uitsluiten van verdere deelname aan het onderdeel of een gedeelte daarvan. Voorwaarden voor voldoende deelname worden van te voren vastgelegd in de studiewijzer en/of op Canvas.

Aanvullende eisen voor dit vak:

Voor dit vak geldt geen aanwezigheidsplicht. Actieve deelname wordt echter wel sterk aangeraden.

Toetsing

The final grade of this course is determined by a (written) midterm exam (30%) and a (written) final exam (70%). You need a minimum grade of 5.0 for the final exam to pass (and, of course, an average grade of 5.5 or higher).

The midterm exam covers Chapters 5, 6, 8 – 10 and 13.

The final exam covers all of the course material (i.e., Chapters 5, 6, 8 – 11, 13 – 17)

If you do not pass the course on the first try, the resit covers all of the course material and counts for 100% of the final grade (i.e., the midterm does not count anymore).

Mogelijkheden voor inzage worden via Canvas gecommuniceerd.

Fraude en plagiaat
