Course manual 2024/2025

Course content

The following topics will be discussed: sequence design using the Bloch equations, advanced MRI sequences (TSE, SSFP, EPI), steady-state-free-precession (SSFP), quantitative imaging (T1-, T2-mapping), parallel-imaging (SENSE, GRAPPA, Compressed Sensing). Mathematica will be used to make simulations of MRI pulse sequences.

Study materials

Literature

  • Haacke, 'Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Physical Principles and Sequence Design.
  • Bernstein, 'Handbook of MRI Pulse Sequences'.

Practical training material

  • Mathematica and Matlab scripts

Other

  • Lecture hand-outs.

Objectives

  • Understand modern literature on advanced MR image acquisition strategies.
  • Program MRI simulations to investigate the behavior of a basic MRI sequence.
  • Critically assess the outcomes of the MRI simulations.
  • Read a scientific journal paper and translate it into an MRI sequence programming task.
  • Present a paper and MRI simulations to fellow students.

Attendance

Requirements concerning attendance (OER-B).

  • In addition to, or instead of, classes in the form of lectures, the elements of the master’s examination programme often include a practical component as defined in article A-1.2 of part A. The course catalogue contains information on the types of classes in each part of the programme. Attendance during practical components is mandatory.
