Electricity and Magnetism
6 EC
Semester 2, periode 5
5092ELMA6Y
This course deals with one of the fundamental forces of nature; the electromagnetic force. Electric and magnetic phenomena are described by a set of four equations known as Maxwell’s equations. These equations will be introduced by intuitive arguments based on experimental observations. The course is subdivided into three sections: Electrostatics (situations where electric charges are at rest), Magnetostatics (situations involving steady currents) and Electrodynamics (situations involving time-dependent electric and magnetic fields).

The lectures (hoorcollege – ‘HC’) and tutorials (werkcollege – ‘WC’) will be given in-person, i.e., not online. This year, the course will be given by one lecturer: John Sheil. The lectures will be given in English, however, the WC assignments, the two partial exams (deeltoetsen) and the final exam (tentamen) will be in Dutch.
A detailed set of lecture notes has been developed for this course; see the document ‘Lecture_notes_Elektriciteit_en_Magnetisme_2025.pdf’ on Canvas. Each HC will cover a chapter in the lecture notes (see ‘Content per HC’ section below). A powerpoint presentation summarising each chapter will be given, and examples will be worked out on the whiteboard. The WCs will give you the opportunity to put into practice that which you learned in the HC.

0% Deeltoets 1 |
The grades from the two deeltoetsen can give you a maximum of +1.0 bonus point for your final grade. The final grade is determined as follows: final grade = exam grade + 0.05* (grade deeltoets 1 + grade deeltoets 2). To pass the course, you must get a minimum grade of a 5.0 in the exam. The bonus point does not count for the resit.
What chapters do the deeltoetsen cover?
All material covered in this course can be found under the heading 'Content per HC' in the document 'Studiewijzer_EM_2024_2025.pdf' on Canvas. Deeltoets 1 covers material presented in Chapters 1-6, and deeltoets 2 covers material presented in Chapters 7-12. You can bring a single A4 sheet containing handwritten formulae to the deeltoetsen and the final exam (you can write on both sides of the sheet). Non-scientific calculators are not permitted for the deeltoetsen or the final exam.
