Course content

In dit project ga je een artikel schrijven over een zelfgekozen onderwerp uit de Biochemie, Milieuchemie of Groene Chemie. We zullen gebruik maken van wetenschappelijke literatuur, stellen zelf een onderzoeksvraag op en schrijven op een wetenschappelijke manier een beschouwend artikel over een van de interessante onderwerpen die de Groene Chemie rijk is! 

Je kruipt hiervoor in de huid van de redacteur van een wetenschappelijk tijdschrift, gespecialiseerd in een bepaalde richting van de (groene) chemische wereld. Als redacteur is het je taak om een beschouwend artikel te schrijven over een onderwerp waar in jouw tijdschrift veel artikelen over zijn gepubliceerd. Je begint dit artikel met een introductie, waarin je theoretische achtergrond over je onderwerp geeft en de maatschappelijke relevantie aanduidt. Je eindigt deze introductie met een onderzoeksvraag: wat is je belangrijkste aspect van je onderwerp waarop je je wilt toespitsen in dit artikel? Vervolgens beschrijf je de werkwijze en resultaten van andere artikelen die hierover gepubliceerd zijn, je geeft hiermee een overzicht van de recente ontwikkelingen over je onderwerp. Je formuleert daarna nog een conclusie en een vooruitblik in welke richting vervolgonderzoek zou kunnen gaan met eventuele implicaties. Als redacteur geef je dus in de laatste paragraaf jouw visie over de toekomst van jouw onderwerp.

Objectives

• The student is able to formulate a research question which is relevant to the studied research area.
• The student is able to search and select relevant literature to be able to answer the research question.
• The student is able to critically evaluate modern chemical literature.
• The student is able to write a thesis by applying Academic English language and sentences compositions.
• The student is able to properly structure the thesis to form a well-readably story with the research question as the central theme.
• The student is able to draw sound conclusions from information found in scientific literature.

In dit project ga je voornamelijk zelf aan de slag met je project, door individueel of in duo's een literatuuronderzoek te verrichten en hier een wetenschappelijke beschouwing over te schrijven. Een tweetal gesprekken met de coordinator zijn onderdeel van dit proces, om de voortgang en structuur van je artikel te bespreken.

Attendance

Programme's requirements concerning attendance (OER-B):

• Active participation is expected of each student in the course for which he is registered.
• If a student cannot attend an obligatory part of a programme's component due to circumstances beyond his control, he must report in writing to the teacher in question as soon as possible. The teacher, if necessary after consulting the study adviser, may decide to issue the student a replacing assignment.
• It is not allowed to miss obligatory parts of the programme's component if there is no case of circumstances beyond one's control.
• In case of participating qualitatively or quantitatively insufficiently, the examiner can expel a student from further participation in the programme's component or a part of that component. Conditions for sufficient participation are fixed in advance in the study guide and/or on Canvas.

Voor de kick-off meeting van het project is aanwezigheid zeer gewenst. 

Assessment

Het beschouwende artikel wordt van feedback voorzien en becijferd. Indien dit cijfer een onvoldoende betreft dan is een herkansing mogelijk waarbij het artikel kan worden herschreven. 

Inspection of assessed work

De student kan na beoordeling een gesprek aanvragen met de coordinator om de gegeven feedback mondeling te bespreken. 

Assignments

Voor de beoordeling wordt een rubric gebruikt, specifieke feedback bij het artikel wordt verstrekt via Canvas. Het project wordt individueel of in duo's uitgevoerd, voor die laatste gelden wel aanvullende eisen betreffende de lengte van het artikel.
