Course manual 2024/2025

Course content

A broad range of important homogeneous catalytic reactions will be discussed. Emphasis will be on transition metal catalyzed reactions. Important aspects like mechanistic studies, kinetics, and effects of the nature of the metal ion and ligand structure will be explained. Processes that are applied industrially are discussed more in-depth. The important role of homogeneous catalysis in organic synthesis will be illustrated. Active student participation.

Literature

  • P.W.N.M. van Leeuwen, 'Homogeneous Catalysis; Understanding the Art'.

Objectives

  • The student can reproduce key catalytic mechanisms and cycles as discussed during the course.
  • The student is also expected to use acquired knowledge to discuss reactions that have not been covered.
  • The student can analyze, discuss and interpret influence of ligands, metal oxidation state, reaction conditions and substrate properties on the outcome of specific reactions.
  • The student can discuss kinetic data and likely rate determining steps based on experimental and computational data.
  • The student can compare diferent catalysts for one specific reaction based on performance, mechanism, scope, reaction conditions and kinetic profile.
  • The student can apply and extrapolate known concepts to new catalytic reactions.
