Globale inhoud

In Quality of Life Research, you are challenged to bring in different skills and theoretical background, which you have acquired during the first year, and put them into practice. In a small group, you will conduct scientific research on the relationship between a natural object, species or ecosystem and people's quality of life. By individually gathering and analyzing both quantitative and qualitative empirical data, you will learn a lot about day-to-day academic practice.

Planning and executing empirical research in only four weeks is challenging. Therefore, we have already prepared a research design (including prescribed methods) and research topic.

You start by preparing a coherent research proposal on a relevant topic. This will serve as a plan for the actual research, but also as an instrument to reflect on the various choices of a researcher, from the identification of a relevant topic to the selection of your methods. You will then carry out the proposed research via qualitative and quantitative methods for gathering and analyzing data. The results will be presented and discussed in a coherent research report and final presentation.

Leerdoelen

  • Formulating a problem definition, including an objective and a relevant and clearly demarcated research question.
  • Designing research, i.e. conceptualizing relevant theories and key concepts related to the chosen topic, operationalizing these concepts, and choosing methods of data collection.
  • Systematically identifying and collecting data sources.
  • Finding and processing scientific literature.
  • Qualitative methods, e.g. interview and stakeholder analysis, as were taught in the course Kwaliteit van Leven.
  • Quantitative methods, e.g. designing a survey and doing statistical analysis during R, as were taught in the course Verzamelen, Visualeren & Analyseren.
  • Planning, organizing, and monitoring research tasks.
  • Writing a report including the various steps of the entire research project.
  • Discussing the research results against the background of the relevant ongoing debate about the topic.
  • Presenting the research in a clear oral presentation.
  • Reflecting on the collaboration itself and on the personal role and involvement in the group process.

Aanwezigheid

Aanwezigheidseisen opleiding (OER-B):

  • You can miss 1 out of 7 werkcolleges with a valid reason.
  • Attendance for all 3 lectures is compulsory

Sterke punten
  • Clear structure
Suggesties ter verbetering
  • More relevant topics
Reactie docent:
  • We adapted the list of topics, in order to facilitate a stronger connection between the topic and the broad concept of "quality of life". In addition, we will stimulate students to focus their research on a more applicable unit of analysis (e.g. health, safety, income etc.).
