Course content

In this course, professional artists with a science background will teach you the basic theory and skills required to let you produce visual communications that stick out from the grey masses. Of course, by the time you finish, you won't be an experienced artist yet, but you will have gained a basic toolkit allowing you to further develop your skillset.

Throughout the course, you will work on a personal project allowing you to bring your learned skills into practice.

Practical training material

  • A drawing tablet is strongly recommended (from~€ 40; more expensive models provide more options)

Software

  • Adobe Creative Cloud (can be purchased via Surfspot) is the industry standard and strongly recommended; freeware alternatives (e.g. Inkscape, GIMP) acceptable.

Objectives

  • The student can apply basic rules of composition and use of light to produce professionally-looking graphics
  • The student can use graphical software to produce professionally-looking graphics and videos
  • The student can apply the theory behind graphic facilitation and recording to create visual stories (e.g. to guide a meeting towards a goal).

Requirements of the programme concerning attendance (OER-B):

  1. Attendance during practical components exercises is mandatory.

Additional requirements for this course:

All sessions are planned on campus, the question hours will be online (zoom). Participation during the four campus sessions is mandatory. If you are not able to join one of the sessions, contact the course coordinator to discuss your possibilities of passing the course (missing more than 1 session will result in a negative assessment (fail) of the course).
