Glonal objectives of the AMEP Seminar

After successful completion of this course, you will have

  • designed
  • assembled 
  • demonstrated 

an attractive series of scientific seminars centred

  • on AMEP-relevant research done in greater Amsterdam
  • on AMEP alumni sharing their career choices and experiences.

The objectives also include evaluation of the series’ effectiveness both organisationally and in terms of community building & cohesion.

AMEP Seminar is part of your decision-making process for a host group for your Thesis Research Project, and provides information on career opportunities after AMEP.

Knowledge → Tested via Q&A in Seminar sessions.

  • Identify the different stakeholders behind AMEP
  • Summarize the role of each type of stakeholder
  • Outline the different research directions pursued at the different institutes participating in AMEP

Skills

  • Develop assessment criteria. Use them to evaluate effectiveness / success of the activities
    → Tested via 1) visible ‘tuning’ of activities mid-stream; 2) reflection on feedback and on self-evaluation. The group writes a  self-evaluation’, including a SWOT analysis
  • Demonstrate the ability to organise effectively
    → Tested via acceptance & positive cooperation from researchers/teaching staff, administrators and alumni

Behaviour

  • Write texts explaining what the AMEP Seminar and its objectives are (also with reference to the stakeholder groups)
    → Tested via feedback requested and received from non-AMEP-student participants and other stakeholders
  • Produce content for Instagram, Twitter and the blog on AMEP.Amsterdam
    → Tested via visible output on Instagram, Twitter and AMEP.Amsterdam

Registration automatically requires active participation in the organization and execution of the weekly sessions and related activities.

Objectives

  • Identify the stakeholders of the AMEP track and summarise their roles
  • Outline the different research directions at the different institutes/departments participating in AMEP
  • Develop assessment criteria for the effectiveness and success of the activities
  • Demonstrate the ability to organise effectively
  • Communicate like a professional with AMEP Seminar stakeholders such as donors, speakers (both researchers and alumni), BSc students
  • Produce and post attractive and effective content on Twitter, Instagram and AMEP.Amsterdam in keeping with a graduate, professional environment
  • Apply the info in the AMEP Seminar to assess which research direction and project in which research group is the right one for your MSc Thesis Project
  • Analyse and reflect on the info in the AMEP Seminar towards your own next career step after the MSc

Presentation/symposium
the weekly sessions vary between the following types:

  • intra-AMEP seminar sessions
    • organisational meet-ups in which the group (+ instructor) discuss the goals, who-does-what (AMEP Blog, social medai, organising speaker Seminars, social events, coaching on how to reach those goals, planning of AMEP-Seminar and AMEP-wide social events, reflection on how things are going and how to respond; self-evaluation; SWOT
  • AMEP Seminars with presenters from research and alumni
    • organised by the AMEP-Seminarians: advertised, filmed, catered, including moderated Q&A, and 'poster' in large and 'legacy tile' formats
  • 2 x full session (i.e. 1h45m) used by the AMEP Track Coordinator  on 15 September and 8 December for Academic Plan sessions
  • 4 x 1/2 sessions (45m) at four time-points in which the AMEP Track Coordinator discusses course choices and progress: 29Sept., 24Nov, 1March, 27April

Attendance

Requirements concerning attendance (OER-B).

  • In addition to, or instead of, classes in the form of lectures, the elements of the master’s examination programme often include a practical component as defined in article A-1.2 of part A. The course catalogue contains information on the types of classes in each part of the programme. Attendance during practical components is mandatory.
  • Additional requirements for this course:

    This is a pass/fail course, and attendance in the sessions is mandatory, and active participation in the AMEP Seminar's activities is required to be eligible for a pass grade. Cases of illness or other insurmountable-seeming reasons for non-attendance need to be flagged with the instructor (MSG) prior to the session.

    Final grade

    This is a pass/fail module, so there are no grades.

    Factors in getting a "pass" include:

    • strong record of attendence at the physical AMEP Seminar sessions timetabled in DataNose
    • good record of active participation in the activities of the A-Seminar
    • actively helping to build a cohort feeling "AMEP Class of 2024" and a good connection to the AMEP Class of 2023

    Mastery of the learning objectives are expressed in the following:

    Inspection of assessed work

    There is no grade, so this is not relevant.

    To achieve the Global Objectives outlined at the top of this Course Manual, the assignments (=AMEP Activities) include the following:

      • Social events
      • Digital presence of A-Seminar and AMEP Class of 2024
      • these three activities involve fund-rasising, communication to different players/stakeholders (IoP management, IoP secretariat, catering, instructors and researchers, AMEP Class of '23; NSJD BSc students, alumni...)

    Fraud and plagiarism

    Course structure

    This will be set-up and developped in concert with the AMEP-Seminarians as part of their learning-by-doing activities in the A-Seminar. Canvas will be used for the communication of all this as it develops.

    Additional information

    The AMEP Seminar makes use of a Canvas page to which the students also get upload access, to enable easy sharing of info across the group as a whole.
