  • Learn the basics of propositional and predicate logic
  • Learn to translate from natural language to logical formulas and back
  • Learn to formally prove logical formula’s
  • Learn the requirements of representing knowledge at Web scale
  • Learn and use web query and modeling languages (e.g. RDF, RDFS, OWL, SPARQL) and automatic reasoning capabilities
  • Be able use these technologies based on these languages (e.g. RDF libraries, query languages, ontology editors)
  • Obtain familiarity with the research fields of Semantic Web, Knowledge Graphs, Knowledge Representation and Information Extraction

Literature

    • A Semantic Web Primer, 3rd edition,
Grigoris Antoniou, Paul Groth, Frank van Harmelen and Rinke Hoekstra, MIT Press, September 2012

Lecture notes and Slides

Each week/topic will be accompanied by slides.

Weekly course plan

You can find the materials of every week under Modules in Canvas. Here is an overview.

Week Topic
1 Description of the course.
Propositional logic.
2 Proofs and Predicate Logic
3 RDF and RDFS
4 Mid-term exam
5 SPARQL
6 OWL
7 Knowledge graphs
8 Final exam

Note that in 2023 the Final exam is scheduled on Friday of week 7 (26 May 2023).

Examination/toetsing

Individual formative (non-graded) assignments will be given weekly.

  • Two partial exams

We assess progress in this course by two exams in week 4 and 8.

For grading exams, we follow in this course the rules of the OER, which can be found at https://student.uva.nl/onderwerpen/onderwijs-en-examenregelingen-oer

Your final grade consists of the average of the two exams. Both exams need to be >= 5.5 to pass the course.

Schedule

  • See Datanose
  • Lectures are mandatory.
  • Weekly exercises will be given after a lecture on Wednesday.
  • Practicals on Thursday are recommended for working on solving the exercises with the possibility of receiving feedback or guidance from TAs.
  • Optional practicals on Mondays are meant for those who didn't finish exercises on Thursday, or still have questions. Note that on Monday two groups are combined into one.

Fraud, plagiarism, sharing answers

  • We assume good intentions in this course: if fraud is suspected, the parties involved will be consulted before action is taken. However, it is possible that (suspected) fraud will be reported to the Board of Examiners and lead to exclusion from (parts of) the course.
