Globale inhoud

 

It is important that scientific knowledge is popularized for a general audience. This can also be seen in the various research grants in Europe, in the latest years more and more attention is paid to outreach of the produced research. Currently there are many magazines and online platforms that actively pursue this goal. Moreover, most of the newspapers have science columns where new scientific discoveries are presented and discussed.

When you want to communicate scientific results to a different audience than your colleagues it is important to choose an approach that suits and respects their background and interests. In this honors module we will focus on the following aspects of science communication:

1. limitations and responsibilities of science journalism;
2. making a clear readers profile;   
3. choosing an approach angle that is suitable for the target reader;
4. writing an article intended for the chosen target reader;
5. getting acquainted and practising with interview techniques;
6. performing an interview.

During this module we will also have a look to the various platforms, physical and online, that exist and we will investigate their target readers and the content of the articles they publish.

The main goal of this module is to submit your article to a suitable science communication platform.  The article you will write can be an opinion article, an informative article explaining some concept, or an interview.

• The student knows which science communication platforms exist in the Netherlands and what their scopes are.
• The student is aware of the limitations and responsibilities of science journalism.
• The student is familiar with performing an interview.
• The student can explain mathematical research and results, written or orally, to a suitably chosen target audience.
• The student can choose an appropriate platform to submit their article.
• The student is aware of the general guidelines regarding the submission and the review process of science journals and magazines.

Aanwezigheid

Aanwezigheidseisen opleiding (OER-B):

• Van elke student wordt actieve deelname verwacht aan het onderdeel waarvoor hij/zij staat ingeschreven.
• Als een student door persoonlijke omstandigheden niet aanwezig kan zijn bij een verplicht onderdeel van het programma, dient hij/zij dit zo snel mogelijk schriftelijk te melden bij de betreffende docent en de studieadviseur.
• Het is niet toegestaan om verplichte onderdelen van een onderdeel te missen als er geen sprake is van overmacht.
• Bij kwalitatief of kwantitatief onvoldoende deelname, kan de examinator de student uitsluiten van verdere deelname aan het onderdeel of een gedeelte daarvan. Voorwaarden voor voldoende deelname worden van te voren vastgelegd in de studiewijzer en op Canvas.
• Bij alle onderwijseenheden van jaar 1 en 2 is een student verplicht bij minimaal 80% van de werkcolleges en tutoraten aanwezig te zijn. Bovendien moet worden deelgenomen aan eventuele tussentoetsen en verplicht gesteld huiswerk. Als niet aan deze verplichting is voldaan, wordt de student uitgesloten voor de herkansing van de onderwijseenheid. In geval van persoonlijke omstandigheden, zoals in OER-A Artikel A-6.4 omschreven, wordt in overleg met de studieadviseur een afwijkende regeling voorgesteld.

Fraude en plagiaat

Dit vak hanteert de algemene 'Fraude- en plagiaatregeling' van de UvA. Hier wordt nauwkeurig op gecontroleerd. Bij verdenking van fraude of plagiaat wordt de examencommissie van de opleiding ingeschakeld. Zie de Fraude- en plagiaatregeling van de UvA: http://student.uva.nl
